Appealing a Decline Due to UIF Registration
A very common reason for grant rejection is 'UIF Registered'. This happens because SASSA's database checks find your ID registered on the Department of Labour's UIF database, even if you are no longer receiving payments.
The frustrating part is that this is usually not your fault at all. It is not even necessarily UIF's fault — it is a record that was left in the system. The good news: the fix is simple and most appeals of this kind are successful once you provide the right proof. What you need is one document, and this guide tells you exactly how to get it.
Steps to Appeal
Visit the Department of Labour
Visit your local Department of Labour office to request a UI-19 form or a UIF Status Letter.
Get proof of termination
Ensure the letter clearly states your employment has terminated and you are no longer receiving monthly UIF payouts.
Make a copy
Scan or take a clear photo of this official letter.
Submit your appeal
Submit your appeal online via the ITSAA portal and upload the proof of UIF termination, or present it at a SASSA office.
Timeline
Submit as soon as you receive the decline, within 90 days. The Department of Labour can take 5-10 days to print your status letter.
Required Documents
- UI-19 form or official UIF status confirmation letter
- Copy of your ID
- Unemployment affidavit
Why This Happens
- Employer failed to update your termination status with the Department of Labour
- Legacy database error on the state servers
Why did SASSA say I have UIF when I was retrenched years ago?
This is almost always because your former employer never submitted your UI-19 termination form to the Department of Labour, leaving your status active on their database.
My employer closed down. How do I get the UI-19 form?
You can still get it. Visit the Department of Labour with your ID and explain that your employer no longer exists. They can generate a UIF status letter showing no active payments even if the original employer is gone.
Do I need to submit the UI-19 form, or will SASSA check it themselves?
Submit it. SASSA's automated system only reads the database flag — it will not reconcile it for you. Upload the UI-19 or status letter with your appeal so a human reviewer can close the file and overturn the decline.
