How to Update Your SASSA Bank Details
If you need to change the bank account where your SASSA grant is paid, you can do it online through the SRD portal or in person at a SASSA office. The new account must be registered in your own name.
If you have changed banks, closed an old account, or simply made a typo last time, you are in the right place. This is one of those small admin tasks that feels fiddly but is genuinely important — wrong bank details are the number one reason grant payments get stuck in limbo.
The account MUST be yours
SASSA only pays into an account in the applicant's own name. You cannot use a relative's or friend's account — even with their permission. If you do not have your own account, use Cash Send or the SASSA card instead of risking a frozen payment.
Method 1: Update Online (Recommended)
Log into the SRD portal
Go to srd.sassa.gov.za. Enter your ID number and phone number. Verify with the OTP sent to your phone.
Navigate to 'Update Bank Details'
Find the bank details section on your dashboard.
Enter your new bank account information
Provide your new bank name, account number, branch code, and account type (Savings, Cheque, or Transmission).
Confirm the details
Double-check every digit of the account number and branch code. A single wrong digit will delay your payment.
Submit and wait for verification
SASSA will verify the new account with your bank. This takes 5 to 10 business days.
Method 2: Update at a SASSA Office
If you cannot access the online portal, visit your nearest SASSA office with your ID and a bank statement or letter from your bank confirming the new account. Complete the SASSA Consent Form for Bank Payment and a SASSA officer will process the change.
Important Rules
The bank account must be in your own name. SASSA will not pay grants into third-party accounts. Bank verification takes 5-10 business days. Do not close your old account until the first payment arrives in the new account.
How long does it take for bank details to update?
Bank verification takes 5 to 10 business days. Once verified, the new account is used for the next month's payment.
Can I update my bank details if I lost access to my phone number?
No. You must visit a SASSA office with your ID to update your phone number first, then use the online portal.
Will changing my bank details affect my current month's payment?
If you change your details after the 20th of the month, the change will apply from the following month. Do not change details while a payment is processing.
