How to Check Your SASSA Appeal Status
After submitting your appeal to the Independent Tribunal for Social Assistance Appeals (ITSAA), you can track its progress online. You will need your ID number, phone number, and Appeal Reference Number.
Weeks passing with no update is the most anxious part of appealing, and it is also completely normal — the tribunal can take up to 90 days. The good news is that your appeal is almost never lost in the system. This guide walks you through checking the status yourself, so you never have to wait on hold or rely on rumours about how your appeal is progressing.
How to Check Online
Go to the appeal portal
Visit srd.dsd.gov.za (for SRD appeals) or the ITSAA tracking portal.
Enter your ID number
Type your 13-digit South African ID number.
Enter your phone number
Enter the phone number you used when filing the appeal.
Enter your Appeal Reference Number
Type the reference number you received after submitting your appeal.
Click 'Check Status'
Your appeal status will be displayed on the screen.
What the Statuses Mean
- Received: Your appeal has been submitted and is waiting to be assigned to a tribunal member
- Under Review: A tribunal member is examining your case and evidence
- Pending Documents: The tribunal has requested additional documents from you
- Ruling Issued: A final decision has been made — check for the outcome
- Closed: The appeal process is complete
SMS Notifications
ITSAA sends SMS notifications at key milestones: when your appeal is received, when additional documents are requested, and when a ruling is issued. Keep your phone number updated to receive these notifications.
I lost my Appeal Reference Number. Can I still check my status?
Yes. Contact ITSAA directly or visit your nearest SASSA office with your ID to retrieve your reference number.
How often should I check my appeal status?
Checking once every 2-3 weeks is sufficient. The tribunal takes 60-90 days, so frequent checking will not speed up the process.
What if my status has not changed in over 90 days?
Contact ITSAA directly or visit your nearest SASSA office to follow up. There may be a backlog or a documentation issue.
