Payment Methods Explained in Detail
Bank Transfer (EFT) — Fast and Direct
SASSA deposits your grant directly into your personal South African bank account via Electronic Funds Transfer (EFT). This is the fastest and most convenient method for beneficiaries who have a bank account.
Bank Account Requirements
Your bank account must be in your name and match your ID number exactly. SASSA sends a small test deposit (under R10) to verify ownership before activating EFT payments. Joint accounts or accounts in another person's name will be rejected.
- Processing time: 1-3 business days after the official pay date
- Supported banks: All major South African banks (Capitec, Standard Bank, FNB, Absa, Nedbank, and others)
- Fees: No fees charged by SASSA. Your bank may charge a small deposit fee (usually under R5)
- Security: Payments are processed through the secure national payment system (NPS)
- Reliability: Most reliable method with the fewest delays or failures
Cash Send (Retail Collection) — No Bank Account Needed
Cash Send is SASSA's cash collection method for beneficiaries without a bank account. You receive an SMS voucher with a unique PIN, which you take to any participating retailer to collect your grant in cash.
Participating Retailers
You can collect Cash Send at: Pick n Pay, Shoprite, Checkers, Boxer, Usave, and Spar. Cash Send is free — no collection fees are charged by SASSA or the retailers.
Receive your SMS voucher
After your grant is approved, SASSA sends an SMS with a voucher code and PIN to your registered phone number.
Go to a participating retailer
Visit any Pick n Pay, Shoprite, Checkers, Boxer, Usave, or Spar till point.
Provide your ID and SMS details
Tell the cashier you are collecting a SASSA Cash Send. Provide your ID book or smart ID card.
Receive your cash
The cashier processes the voucher and hands you your grant in cash. Keep the SMS until you have received the money.
Post Office Collection — Being Phased Out
Some beneficiaries still collect their grants at designated South African Post Office (SAPO) branches. However, SASSA is gradually phasing out Post Office collections in favour of bank EFT transfers and Cash Send retail collection.
Important: Switch Before It Closes
Many Post Office branches have reduced services or closed permanently. If you currently collect at a Post Office, switch to bank EFT or Cash Send now to avoid disruption. Visit your nearest SASSA office or call 0800 60 10 11 to change your method.
Mobile Pay Points — For Rural Communities
In remote rural areas where there are no banks or retailers nearby, SASSA operates mobile pay points. These are temporary payment stations set up on scheduled dates each month. Your SASSA office will tell you the date and location for your nearest mobile pay point.
Find Your Mobile Pay Point Schedule
Contact your local SASSA office or check your province hub page for the monthly mobile pay point schedule in your area. Schedules may change, so confirm before travelling.
How to Switch Your Payment Method
You can switch between payment methods at any time. The process depends on whether you are an SRD grant beneficiary or a mainstream grant beneficiary.
For SRD R370 Grant Beneficiaries
Log into the SRD Portal
Go to srd.sassa.gov.za and enter your ID number and the phone number you used during application.
Request and enter OTP
An OTP will be sent to your phone. Enter it to access your profile.
Go to Payment Method
Navigate to the 'Payment Method' section in your profile dashboard.
Select your preferred method
Choose between bank transfer (EFT) or Cash Send (retail collection).
Confirm and save
Review your selection and confirm. The change will apply from the next payment cycle.
For Mainstream Grant Beneficiaries
If you receive a mainstream grant (Older Person Grant, Disability Grant, Child Support Grant, etc.), visit your nearest SASSA office to change your payment method. Bring your ID book and proof of your new bank account (if switching to EFT). The change takes effect from the next payment cycle.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use someone else's bank account to receive my grant?
No. The bank account must be registered in your name as it appears on your ID. SASSA cross-checks the account holder's name and ID number against their database. Using another person's account will cause payment delays or failures. If you do not have your own bank account, use Cash Send instead.
How long does it take for a new payment method to take effect?
Changes to your payment method typically take effect from the next payment cycle. If you switch mid-month, your current month's payment will still go to your old method. The new method applies from the following month.
What if I don't receive my Cash Send SMS?
If you do not receive the SMS within 3 business days of the pay date, check that your phone number is correct on the SRD portal or at your SASSA office. You can also request the SMS to be resent. If the issue persists, visit your SASSA office to investigate.
Are there any fees for Cash Send collections?
No. SASSA does not charge any fees for Cash Send, and participating retailers (Pick n Pay, Shoprite, Checkers, Boxer, Usave, Spar) do not charge collection fees. You receive the full grant amount.
Can I receive my grant if I live in a rural area without banks?
Yes. SASSA operates mobile pay points in rural areas on scheduled dates. You can also use Cash Send at participating retailers if there is one within reach. Check with your local SASSA office for the mobile pay point schedule in your area.
