SASSA Required Documents Checklist
Having the correct documents ready before you apply for a SASSA grant will save you time and prevent delays. Below is the complete checklist of documents you may need.
Certified copies — the one thing people forget
Most people arrive with the right documents but uncertified copies. A 'certified copy' is one stamped by a police officer at any SAPS station or by a commissioner of oaths, signed within the last few months. You do not need new certification for every single document — just for the important ones like your ID and any legal documents. If you are not sure whether a copy is acceptable, get it certified anyway. It costs nothing at a police station and it is the single most common reason applications get sent back.
Tips before you go
- Bring originals too — SASSA staff may want to see the originals alongside your certified copies
- Copy both sides of your ID if there is anything printed on the back
- Make two copies of everything — one goes in, one stays home with you
- Bank statements must show your full name and the last 3 months of activity
- If you do not have a bill in your name, ask your traditional leader or ward councillor for a letter confirming where you live
Running low on money for copies?
Copies are usually free or very cheap at SASSA offices. Ask before you pay anywhere else — and remember no SASSA official ever charges you for a grant application.
