First, know where appeals go
Declined applications are reviewed by the Independent Tribunal for Social Assistance Appeals (ITSAA), not by SASSA itself. That matters practically: the tribunal only sees what you submit, and it routes cases using the reason codes selected during lodgement. A complete, correctly-coded file moves fast; anything else waits in a queue.
| Decline reason | What the tribunal needs from you |
|---|---|
| Alternative Income Source Identified | Proof the flagged income has stopped: retrenchment letter, termination letter, or 3 months of empty bank statements after the income ended |
| UIF Registered | UI-19 form showing contributions ended, or UIF benefit exhaustion letter |
| NSFAS Funded | NSFAS cancellation or rejection letter |
| Means Test Failed | Sworn unemployment affidavit plus 3 months bank statements showing no income above the threshold |
| Identity Verification Failed | Certified copy of green ID book or smart card; Home Affairs confirmation letter if details changed recently |
Tip 1: Understand exactly why you were declined
Before submitting anything, read your status notification carefully — the decline reason determines your entire evidence strategy. An 'income identified' decline needs proof the income stopped; an 'identity verification failed' decline needs documents, not explanations. Appealing against the wrong problem is the fastest route to dismissal.
Tip 2: Gather complete documentation upfront
The most common cause of appeal delays is incomplete paperwork. Submit everything at once: certified ID copy, three months of bank statements, an unemployment affidavit, and any document specific to your decline reason (see the table above). Incomplete appeals bounce back for more information and can run out the 90-day clock while you gather missing papers.
Tip 3: Appeal each declined month separately
For the SRD R370, every month is assessed independently — so each declined month needs its own appeal. The good news: the ITSAA portal lets you select multiple months in one session, so you can lodge them all together rather than repeating the process monthly.
Tip 4: Use the correct appeal reason code
When lodging, select the code that matches your situation precisely. If none fits and you choose 'Other', write a detailed, factual explanation — dates, amounts, and what changed. The tribunal uses these codes to route your case to the right review team; vague coding means slower reviews and avoidable follow-up requests.
Tip 5: File within 90 days and track progress
Appeals must be lodged within 90 days of the decline notification — late filings are rejected automatically, regardless of merit. Save your Appeal Reference Number the moment it appears, then check the portal regularly. Rulings typically take 60-90 days.
Appeal upheld
SASSA must pay all backdated amounts within 14 business days of the ruling.
Appeal dismissed
You cannot re-appeal the same decision, but if your circumstances change you can lodge a fresh grant application at any time.
Never pay for an appeal
ITSAA appeals are free. Anyone offering 'fast-track' appeals for a fee — especially via WhatsApp — is scamming you. Only use the official portal linked from our appeal guide.
How long do I have to appeal a declined SRD month?
90 days from the decline notification. Late appeals are automatically rejected, so file as soon as you see the decline.
Can I appeal several declined months at once?
Yes. Each month needs its own appeal decision, but the ITSAA portal lets you select multiple months in one session and lodge them together.
How long does an appeal take?
Typically 60-90 days from lodgement to ruling. Complex identity-verification cases can take longer.
What happens if my appeal is upheld?
SASSA pays all backdated amounts for the appealed months within 14 business days of the tribunal ruling.
My appeal was dismissed. What now?
You cannot re-appeal the same decision, but once your circumstances change — income stopped, documents corrected — you may submit a fresh application.
