September 2026 Payment Dates at a Glance
SASSA has confirmed the payment schedule for September 2026. The month follows the standard pattern for permanent grants, keeps the review-cycle window introduced in August, and ends with an important quirk: the first day of the SRD R370 payment window falls on Heritage Day, a national public holiday.
- Older Persons Grant: 2 September 2026 (Wednesday)
- Disability Grant: 3 September 2026 (Thursday)
- Children's Grants: 4 September 2026 (Friday)
- Review Cycle Day: 7 September 2026 (Monday)
- SRD R370 Grant: 24-30 September 2026
The Big Story: Heritage Day Meets the SRD Window
Heritage Day on Thursday 24 September is one of South Africa's most widely observed public holidays, and this year it coincides exactly with the start of the SRD R370 payment window. For beneficiaries, the practical effect depends on how they collect their money:
- Cash Send recipients: funds are typically available within about two hours of processing, including on public holidays. Most Cash Send beneficiaries will notice little difference.
- Bank account recipients: standard interbank transfers do not process on public holidays, so approvals dated 24 September usually reflect on Friday 25 September.
- SASSA SAPO card holders: Post Office branches close on public holidays. Card collections resume on Friday 25 September.
- Retail collection: supermarkets and retail pay points that trade on the holiday generally continue paying grants, though some may run reduced hours.
Permanent Grants Are Not Affected
Older Persons, Disability, and Children's grants are paid on 2, 3, and 4 September respectively — well before Heritage Day. Only SRD R370 beneficiaries collecting late in the window need to plan around the holiday.
The Review Cycle Continues on Monday 7 September
August introduced a dedicated monthly window for grant-review outcomes and backlog payments, and it continues in September on Monday the 7th. Beneficiaries whose reviews were finalised at the end of August — including those whose payments were delayed pending verification — receive their money on this date. Backdated amounts approved after successful reviews are also settled here.
Grant reviews continue throughout the year. If you receive a review letter or SMS, respond by the date printed in your notice: failing to respond can lead to suspension. SASSA does not publish a list of beneficiaries under review, so a message from a third party claiming to know your review status should be treated as a scam.
What to Bring If You Are Flagged for Review
- Your original South African ID document or smart card
- The review notification letter or SMS from SASSA
- Latest 3 months bank statements if the review concerns financial eligibility
- Proof of residence such as a utility bill or affidavit
- Medical report for Disability Grant reviews
- Any additional documents listed in your specific notification
Read your notification carefully
The letter or SMS states why you were flagged, which documents are required, and where to go. Follow it exactly.
Gather every requested document
Missing documents are the main cause of repeat visits. Make copies of everything for your own records before you travel.
Visit your assigned office or pay point
Go to the location stated in your notification. Review desks typically operate from 8 AM to 4 PM on business days.
Complete the verification process
An officer will check your documents and may capture biometrics. The process usually takes 15 to 30 minutes.
Keep your receipt and track the outcome
You will receive written confirmation. Outcomes are normally communicated within 14 days by SMS and letter.
eLife Suspensions: Reinstatements Flow Through in September
Approximately 68,000 SRD beneficiaries were suspended in May 2026 for incomplete eLife certification. SASSA has been processing reinstatements as verifications are completed, and beneficiaries who finished certification during August should see their grants restored in the September cycle. If your status still shows suspended after certification, contact SASSA on 0800 60 10 11 with your reference number ready.
Bank Transfer Processing Times
As always, official pay dates are not the same as the moment money reflects in your account. Standard transfers take 1 to 3 business days depending on your bank, and public holidays extend that timeline. In September, the key dates to remember are:
- Transfers processed on Thursday 24 September reflect from Friday 25 September due to the holiday.
- Standard bank transfers: 1-2 business days at FNB, Standard Bank, Nedbank, Absa, and Capitec.
- Cash Send: usually available within 2 hours of processing.
- Weekend rule: pay dates falling on weekends shift processing to the next business day.
Will I be paid on 7 September automatically because I was paid on 7 August?
No. Once your review is finalised you return to your normal grant-type date. Only beneficiaries with new review outcomes or backlog payments are paid on 7 September, and SASSA notifies them directly.
Does Heritage Day delay permanent grants?
No. Older Persons (2nd), Disability (3rd), and Children's grants (4th) are all paid more than two weeks before the holiday.
Can I collect my SRD grant at a supermarket on Heritage Day itself?
In most cases yes — major retail pay points that trade on the holiday generally pay grants, although hours may be reduced. Post Office branches are closed.
What happens if I ignore my review notification?
If you do not respond within 30 days, your grant can be suspended without further notice, and reinstatement requires completing the review or reapplying from scratch.
Where can I confirm these dates officially?
Check sassa.gov.za, the srd.sassa.gov.za portal, or call the toll-free helpline on 0800 60 10 11. Official schedules are also posted at local SASSA offices.
