What 'Existing Grant' Means
This status means SASSA's system already has an active grant on the ID number you used, or on the child you applied for. It is a duplication check rather than an income test. Sometimes the existing grant is legitimate and the application is simply unnecessary; sometimes the record is old or wrong and needs to be corrected.
SASSA allows some grants to run together and blocks others. An adult may hold only one of the income-support grants — Older Persons, Disability or War Veterans — at a time. A child cannot be paid a Child Support Grant and a Foster Child Grant for the same child. A caregiver can, however, receive a Child Support Grant for a child while also receiving their own Older Persons or Disability Grant.
Why it happens:
- •You already receive the grant you are applying for.
- •You hold one income-support grant and applied for another that conflicts with it.
- •The child is already on a Child Support Grant under another caregiver.
- •A Foster Child Grant is already paid for the same child.
- •An old grant that was cancelled still shows as active on the system.
- •A duplicate identity record is linked to a grant you do not recognise.
What to check:
- ✓Check if you are already receiving an Older Persons, Disability, or Child Support grant.
- ✓Remember that regulations prohibit receiving the SRD R370 grant if you already receive a social grant.
How long it lasts:
It stays until the duplicate or conflicting record is resolved. Reapplying without changing anything produces the same result.
What to do:
- •Check which grant and which child the existing record refers to before doing anything else.
- •If you already receive that grant, no new application is needed.
- •If you are moving from one income-support grant to another, ask SASSA which one must be cancelled first.
- •If the child is already on a grant under another caregiver, the transfer must be arranged at an office — a new application will be blocked.
- •If the record is old or belongs to someone else, request a record clean-up at a SASSA office with your ID.
- •Keep the reference number for the correction so you can follow up.

Moving a child's grant to a new caregiver
A Child Support Grant cannot simply be applied for again under a new caregiver. The existing grant must be transferred or cancelled first. Both caregivers usually need to be present at the SASSA office, with the child's birth certificate and both IDs.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Existing Grant mean my application was declined?
Not exactly. It means the application was blocked because a grant already exists on the record. Once the duplication is resolved the application can be assessed.
Can I receive two SASSA grants at the same time?
Only in specific combinations. You cannot hold two income-support grants for yourself, and a child cannot receive both a Child Support and a Foster Child Grant.
I cancelled my grant years ago but it still shows. What now?
The cancellation may not have been processed, or an old record is still active. Visit a SASSA office with your ID and ask for the grant record to be checked and cleaned up.
Can a grandmother claim Child Support and her own pension?
Yes. The Older Persons Grant is hers and the Child Support Grant is for the child. Different beneficiaries can be paid on the same payment cycle.
Will I lose money already paid while this is resolved?
Existing payments that were correctly made are not usually recovered. The block applies to the new application, not to a grant you already qualify for.
