Gold Cards No Longer Work
The 31 August 2026 deadline has passed and Postbank has not announced an extension. Gold Cards have been deactivated — if you have not swapped yet, you cannot access your grant money until you collect a Black Card. Do not panic: your money stays safe in your Postbank account and the swap at any collection point remains free.
Why You Must Swap Your Gold Card
Postbank is phasing out the old SASSA Gold Card and replacing it with the new Postbank Black Card as part of a national modernisation of the social grant payment system. The Black Card works at more ATMs, supports contactless payments, and has improved security features. The old Gold Cards were deactivated after 31 August 2026.
Gather your ID
Take your valid South African ID book or smart ID card. A temporary ID is also accepted. You do NOT need your old Gold Card to get the new one.
Find your nearest collection point
Dial *120*355# on your mobile phone to find the nearest collection site, or call Postbank on 0800 53 54 55. You can collect in any province, even if your grant was approved elsewhere.
Visit a Postbank service point or participating retailer
Cards are available at Postbank service points inside selected Shoprite, Checkers, Usave, Pick n Pay, Boxer and Spar stores nationwide.
Collect your Black Card
The swap is completely free and takes a few minutes. No forms are required and no activation is needed — the card works immediately when issued.
Check your balance transferred
Any balance on your old Gold Card transfers automatically to the new Black Card. Do not throw away the old card until you have confirmed your balance moved across.
The Swap Is Free
SASSA and Postbank never charge for the Black Card swap. If anyone asks you to pay a fee, complete a form, or provide your PIN or OTP to receive the card, you are dealing with a scammer. A genuine Black Card has 'Postbank' printed on the front.

- Postbank service points inside selected Pick n Pay and Boxer stores

Find Your Nearest Collection Point
Dial *120*355# from any mobile phone to locate the nearest Postbank card collection site. The service works on all major South African networks. You can also call Postbank on 0800 53 54 55.
Black Card Scam Warning
Scammers are targeting beneficiaries during the card migration. Remember: a genuine Black Card always has 'Postbank' printed on the front. If a card does not say Postbank, it is a fake. SASSA and Postbank will never ask for your PIN, OTP, or banking password, and no one may charge you to swap your card.
- If it is not written 'Postbank' on the front, it is a scam
- No forms are required — if you are asked to sign anything, the card is not genuine
- The swap is free — anyone asking for payment is a fraudster
- Never share your PIN, OTP, or bank password with anyone
- Report scams to the SASSA Fraud Hotline on 0800 60 10 11 or Postbank on 0800 53 54 55
Using your Black Card day to day
The Black Card works at any ATM or till point that accepts Mastercard, and you can withdraw cash for free at participating retailers (Shoprite, Checkers, Pick n Pay, Boxer, Usave) and Postbank ATMs. There are no monthly account fees, and the card supports contactless payments at retailers that accept cards.
Lost or stolen card?
Report it immediately to Postbank on 0800 53 54 55 so the card is blocked. Then visit any Postbank service point with your ID for a replacement. Your grant payments continue as normal — the money stays in your Postbank account while you wait.
My Gold Card Stopped Working — What Now?
If your Gold Card no longer works after 31 August 2026, that is expected and nothing is wrong with your grant. Your money is not lost — it stays in your Postbank account. You simply need to collect your Black Card. The swap is still completely free and still takes minutes at any collection point, even after the deadline.
Don't panic — your money is safe
Your grant payments and any balance on your old card remain on your Postbank account. Only the card itself has been deactivated.
Find a collection point
Dial *120*355# on your mobile phone, or call Postbank on 0800 53 54 55, to find the nearest Postbank service point or participating retailer.
Collect your Black Card with your ID
Visit the collection point with your South African ID (book or smart ID). No old card, no forms, no fees. The Black Card works immediately when issued.
Still Free, Still Quick — After the Deadline
Missing the deadline does not cost you anything extra, and you are not fined or penalised. Postbank continues issuing Black Cards after 31 August. The only consequence is that your old Gold Card stays deactivated until you collect the new card.
Frequently Asked Questions
I missed the 31 August 2026 deadline. Can I still get a Black Card?
