Why the Gold Card is being replaced
Postbank is modernising the social grant payment system, and the Gold Card platform is being phased out as part of that process. The Black Card (the SASSA SAPO/Postbank card) offers stronger security against card fraud, no monthly card fees, and wider acceptance at retail pay points nationwide.
Do you need to switch?
If you currently collect your grant on a Gold Card, then yes — eventually every beneficiary moves to the Black Card. SASSA notifies affected beneficiaries by SMS and office notices in waves rather than all at once. If you have not been contacted yet, you can switch proactively instead of waiting for your wave.

Both issue Black Cards. Offices are busier early in the month — mid-month visits are faster.
Bring your original ID
Green barcoded ID book or smart card. Certified copies are not enough for card issuance.
Request the SASSA Black Card and complete the consent form
The consent form redirects your grant payments into the new card account.
Receive your card — it is free
There is no charge for the card or the migration itself. The new card is active immediately.
What happens to your money during the switch
Payments redirect to the Black Card from your next payment cycle after the swap. Any balance still on your old Gold Card does not vanish — it transfers across, and you can also withdraw remaining funds from the Gold Card until the balance reaches zero during the transition period.
What happens if you don't switch?
The Gold Card system will eventually be switched off. Beneficiaries who stay on it face growing disruption: some retailers already decline Gold Cards, and once the platform closes, un-swapped cards cannot receive payments at all — grants would be held until you collect a Black Card. Switching now avoids all of this.
Card scams peak during migrations
No one legitimate will ever ask you to 'verify' your card by phone or SMS, share your PIN, or pay a fee for the Black Card. The swap happens in person with your ID only.
Is the Black Card compulsory?
Yes for grant collection — the Gold Card platform is being retired entirely. There is no opt-out, but beneficiaries can alternatively switch to direct bank deposit if they prefer their own bank account.
How much does the Black Card cost?
Nothing. The card and the migration are free. Report anyone charging a 'migration fee' to the SASSA fraud line.
Will my grant date change when I switch?
No. Payment dates stay exactly the same; only the card receiving the money changes, starting from your next cycle after the swap.
What about money left on my Gold Card?
Balances carry over to the Black Card, and you can draw down remaining Gold Card funds during the transition window.
I lost my Gold Card. Can I get a Black Card directly?
Yes — visit an office or Post Office with your ID and request the Black Card as your replacement. Your grant redirects there from the next cycle.
